DESIGN ADVICE FOR SMALL BUSINESS

Design

Corporate image & design

As they say, “you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression”.

For many of your clients, the first time they encounter your business will be via a letter, flyer or advertisement. It is vital to make sure that your printed message is as strong as if you were there in person.

Key design issues

Branding - Is it important for a 'small' business?

One of the most important things you can do as a business owner is to ensure that the visual representation of your business is both professional in appearance and projects the right message to your potential customers. This branding is key!

Design - Why pay a graphic designer when you can knock something up on your own pc?

Starting up in business can be expensive and it is tempting to cut corners. Producing a logo and promotional material are the areas where this is probably the most common - but be aware that it can be detrimental to your sales.

DESIGN & PRINT TIPS

Network, network, network

Simply just try to meet as many people as you can, as you never know what doors they could open up for you.

Business Development

In my experience, business success has come from personal development combined with my own personal growth and maintaining a positive attitude - no matter what pittfalls I have come across I have translated them into challenges.

Word of Mouth

Try using social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter to promote the activities of your company, keep it fresh and fun. Sometimes who you know can be more effective than what you know!

From small acorns.

Resist the temptation to go out and buy yourself all the flash top gear for your business. Get on ebay, local classifieds or even speak to other local businesses that may have spare stuff they are grateful for you to take of their hands. Basically start small and allow yourself to grow, you will be grateful of the money you have saved. Beg and borrow what you can, Good luck.

Cost effective marketing

You don't need to spend lots of money on marketing in the beginning, but you do need to look professional. Why not ask your graphic designer to provide editable versions of everything you use, this way you can make changes to collateral yourself at no extra cost.

Sprinkling your sparkle

Work with your designer to help bring out the spirit and the essence of you and your business through any branding associated with it, by using key words and selecting key images that can be used to capture the essence of what you are trying to achieve.

Design Materials.

Work with your designer to create design materials which will help YOUR business. Most companies start out getting the full hit of business cards, letterheads. logos, compliments slips etc, when they could benefit better from a simple business card and flier. Each business is different and you may not need letterheads and compliments slip at the beginning stage, thus cutting your initial expense down.

Always ask to see a portfolio!

Before giving work to any designer always request to see their portfolio, this way you can get a feel for their style and ability. You can then decide whether you think they're what you're looking for!

When ordering stationery for your new business...

...always order a bit more than you think you'll need as it actually works out cheaper per click the more you order. More cost effective than ordering another batch further down the line!

Brand credibility.

You know what you do but how you communicate that has a greater impact on peoples perception that you think. Profile a typical customer and ask yourself "what consistent message do I want people to take away from every piece of communication?" Do this before starting on anything including writing a brief for your logo design.
